    Light dawns on a weary world

    Light dawns on a weary world
    When eyes begin to see all people’s dignity.
    Light dawn on a weary world:
    The promised day to justice comes.

    Love grows in a weary world
    When hungry hearts find bread
    And children’s dreams are fed.
    Love grows in a weary world;
    The promised feast of plenty comes.

    The trees shall clap their hands;
    The dry lands, gush with spring;
    The hills and mountains
    shall break forth with singing!
    We shall go out with joy,
    And be led forth in peace,
    As all the world in wonder echoes shalom.

    This powerful hymn text, based on Isaiah 55, foretells the coming of Christ as it calls us to faith and repentance.  Chancel Choir members have been living with these words for months as they prepare a challenging setting for the Christmas Musicale.   I’m motivated by the way it describes our faith as a transformation rather than a transaction.  The text of Matthew 25 was brought to us again recently in worship.  The words of Jesus haunt me, “When did we see you hungry?  When did we see you a stranger?  Our faith is not a transaction or a political movement; it is a way of life pointing to Jesus.
